Where it started

Alterra Mountain Company' Community Foundation (AMCCF)'s website was due for a redesign in order to meet the goals of increasing awareness of the foundation, increasing both donations and grant applications, and showcasing community ‘success stories’. The purpose of the redesign was to create an engaging experience that would attract and retain visitors, while also providing a platform for the Foundation to share their mission and the work they do to give back to the mountain communities they operate in.

The Process

The process began by conducting interviews with key Foundation members to understand what users were looking for when visiting the website. The research was used to inform the design of the website and to ensure that the design would meet the needs of the users.

The design process included an analysis of the existing website’s structure and content, and a review of the user research findings. In addition to this, research also focused on competitors' sites and best-in-class practices for world-renowned foundations such as the Gates Foundation, Honnold Foundation, Water.org, and 1% for the Planet. Based on the analysis and the user feedback, the design team decided to focus on leveraging Alterra's corporate brand and prioritizing information architecture to create a simple interface that would draw users in and make it easy for them to find the information they were looking for.

Where it ended

The team redesigned the website to feature bold headers, with striking images of success stories from the foundation. The navigation was simplified to focus on the primary goals of applying, donating and learning more about the foundation. The website was also designed to be mobile-first and optimized for all screen sizes.

Overall, the redesigned website was successful in meeting the goals of increasing awareness of the foundation, increasing both donation requests and donations, and showcasing community ‘success stories’. The website successfully provided an engaging experience for visitors and served as a platform for the Foundation to share their mission and the work they do to support the community.
